CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction, and is one of the most successful breakthroughs of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAD/CAM) in dentistry. With countless applications, CEREC has effectively reduced costs, chair-time and chances of error in a number of dental treatments.
CEREC has made it possible for patients to have a complete aesthetic makeover in a single sitting. The technology can help fabricate inlays, onlays, crowns and veneers in a matter of minutes, ready to be cemented. Since CAD/CAM has been introduced in modern clinics, it has eliminated the need of separate dental laboratories, technicians and machinery required to fabricate restorations. A single CEREC system can be used to take digital impressions and scans, construct the required restoration with impeccable precision on the computer, and finally bring it to the physical form through in-office milling. The virtual model of the teeth, oral cavity and restoration can easily be created on the computer via images taken from an intra-oral camera. The most prominent advantages of CEREC restorations include:
- 100% accuracy and precision
- Reduced chair-time of treatments
- Smile makeovers under an hour
- Elimination of human error in fabrication
- High aesthetic value of restorations
- Impressions are not required
- Biocompatible restorations

In 2008, Dr. Baucum met Dr. Richard Ross, a general dentist in Austin for over 30 years, who independently managed his own private practice. They agreed upon the transition of the practice to Dr. Baucum, and he moved back to Austin with his family to take over the practice in October 2008.
