Whitening
Dental whitening, commonly known as bleaching is the process of removing discoloration and staining from the teeth. Top-of-the-line whitening products guarantee results several shades lighter than the original color of the teeth, but it is important to understand that the final outcome of the treatment depends upon the nature and extent of the discoloration present.
Whitening can either be performed at dental clinics by trained professionals, or at home teeth whitening kits. At a clinic, this non-invasive procedure is performed by applying a whitening gel evenly on to the anterior surfaces of the teeth. A laser or specialized dental light is then shone on this gel activating the bleaching agent which breaks down the stains. The gel is then removed and the procedure is repeated two more times for a duration of at least 15 minutes per cycle. Towards the end, a desensitizing paste is applied to the teeth and gums to relieve any sensitivity that may occur post-treatment.
There are a number of ways in which teeth can becomes stained or discolored. These include:
- Improper oral hygiene and plaque buildup
- Consumption of staining food and beverages such as tea, coffee or wine
- Excessive smoking which leads to accumulation of nicotine particles
